BOULDER CITY – A civilian employee of the Boulder City Police Department (BCPD) has earned national recognition for his efforts to inform the community about sex offenders who live in the area.
Bill Avery, an 11-year veteran with the BCPD, will be one of 50 law enforcement members to receive the National Award for Excellence in Sex Offender Registry Management. The honorees are selected from more than 15,000 law enforcement personnel (in more than 3,000 agencies throughout the country) by OffenderWatch, the largest sex offender registry in the United States.
Avery received the award this morning. He said when the state of Nevada changed how it manages sex offender registrations in 2018, many of the records were missing important information or had inaccurate information. “The state records showed that we had nearly three times the number of registered sex offenders living in the City than were actually here,” Avery explained. “I went through and researched those files and found that we currently have 36.”
Avery said he also added critical information to many of the files so the community could have the most accurate information possible. “We want our residents to have the best, most comprehensive information to help keep them safe,” he added. “That also helped other jurisdictions because when a file is transferred to them, they know there is someone else in their community that will have to become part of the registry process.”
“We’re fortunate to have such a dedicated, committed staff, and Bill regularly goes that extra step to help the public,” said Police Chief Tim Shea. “His efforts are greatly appreciated by the police officers who serve this community.”
“The sex offender registry department is a priority in Boulder City, and that has allowed Avery and the entire department to go above and beyond what is required in statute. Avery and the staff work very hard to collect comprehensive data on every offender in their jurisdiction so that the public has all of the information necessary to protect themselves,” said Mike Cormaci, president of OffenderWatch.
