[ARCHIVED] Boulder City Police are “Joining Forces” against Speeders

BOULDER CITY – Driving too fast can turn a near miss into a crash, or worst yet, a fatality. One-third of fatal crashes nationwide involve speeding, a statistic that is prompting local law enforcement officers to crack down on aggressive drivers and speeders in Boulder City and throughout Nevada this summer.

Boulder City Police Officers are “Joining Forces” with Nevada law enforcement officers to increase high-visibility patrols between August 22 - September 2, 2020, for motorists who are exceeding the speed limit.

Exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for the conditions is one of the most common factors contributing to traffic crashes. “We regularly pull drivers over on I-11 driving more than 100 miles per hour,” said Police Chief Tim Shea. “Often, these drivers have passengers, including young children in their cars. It is disheartening to see adults put their children at such high risk. One error could cost everyone in the car their lives.”

Chief Shea adds that Boulder City’s enforcement is being done with other agencies participating in the Nevada Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety “Joining Forces” campaign. “Joining Forces” is a multi-jurisdictional campaign that provided a grant of $47,000 to Boulder City Police Department for participating this year. This grant will provide the financial resources to pay for officer overtime when personnel are involved in “Joining Forces” traffic enforcement activities.

Speeding is one of the most prevalent factors contributing to traffic crashes and at a tremendous cost. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that the annual cost to society of speeding-related crashes is $40.4 billion.
