[ARCHIVED] BC Airport to Hold Open House Regarding Control Tower

BOULDER CITY – City and Airport staff are moving forward with plans for constructing an Air Traffic Control Tower. Airport staff and Airport Consultant Kimley-Horn and Associates are holding an in-person Open House to discuss the Airport Control Tower on November 15, 2021 from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 401 California Ave., in the Council Chamber. (At this time, attendees must wear a CDC-approved face covering while inside City Hall as mandated by the State of Nevada.)

The FAA previously determined that “increasing volume of arriving and departing traffic without an operating air traffic control tower” was an operational concern. The FAA noted concerns with the arrival of planes requesting opposing landings when traffic patterns are already established, combined with helicopter arrivals and departures crossing the runway.

The Tower will cost over $5 million dollars, with 94.75% paid through a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant and 6.25% from the Airport Fund. “This safety improvement at the airport will be an excellent use of this funding,” said Marissa Adou, Airport Manager. “This Open House will give residents overview of the process of siting an air traffic control tower and see sample photos of the tower cab and of the airport.”

The airport provides general aviation and unscheduled commercial tour operation services to the aviation public.   It is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems plan (NPIAS) under the FAA, so it is eligible to receive annual grants to further the mission of the FAA to provide a safe environment for the flying public. As a Non-Hub, Primary Airport, the City is eligible to receive the minimum entitlement award of $1.8 million annually.

Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., an aviation engineering services and project management consultant agency, will be leading the Tower Siting Study to determine the best location to build the tower.   If you are unable to attend, you can submit questions or concerns to the Airport at AirportAdmin@bcnv.org
