BOULDER CITY: Summer is here and so is the heat. Wednesday, July 9, there is an extreme heat warning in the forecast tomorrow  from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Here are a few tips to protect you, your family, neighbors and pets!

  • Call or text family, friends and neighbors to check on them during Extreme Heat Alerts.
  • Drink plenty of non-alcoholic beverages. If you are thirsty, you may already be dehydrated.
  • Avoid strenuous activity outdoors during the hottest portion of the day.
  • Never leave humans or pets unattended in vehicles. Car interiors can reach 160+ degrees in the heat with fatal results in a short period of time.
  • Walk pets early in the morning and consider weather shoes for their paws. Pavement can reach searing temperatures during the day, resulting in burns on your pet's feet.

Extreme heat can cause health issues like dehydration, heat cramps, heat stroke and exhaustion. Know the symptoms of heat stroke and heat exhaustion:

HEAT STROKE: If someone has a throbbing headache, confusion, faints or loses consciousness, has a rapid pulse and/or a fever above 103-degrees, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY. Heat strokes can be deadly.

HEAT EXHAUSTION: Symptoms include dizziness, blurred vision, headache, fever, fatigue, nausea, rapid/shallow breaths, and/or severe sweating/clammy skin. Get the person into a cool environment right away, have them lie down and place cold, wet towels on neck and forehead to cool them down. If symptoms worsen or they do not recover in 60 minutes, seek medical assistance.

Older residents are at greater risk of heat illness because of certain variables: aging can make it more difficult to cool down and some medications can contribute to dehydration, If they start to experience any symptoms of heat illness, they should contact their physician right away. The longer they wait, the more damage the heat can do.

If you need a place to cool off, there are two options in Boulder City:

  • Boulder City Library: Escape the heat and check out what the Boulder City Library has to offer! Regular hours are Friday/Saturday/Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. The library opens an hour earlier, at 9 a.m., for senior browsing on Wednesdays between Memorial Day and Labor Day for an additional chance to beat the heat. (Address is 701 Adams Boulevard.)
  • Senior Center:  Senior residents (55 and older) can escape the heat at the Senior Center of Boulder City on weekdays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., closed weekends and holidays.   (Address is 813 Arizona Street.)
